The hydropower generation, that is purely domestic renewable energy, is highly appreciated for the irreplaceable roles of securing the national energy security and mitigating the global warming. In addition, the pumped-storage power generation developed rapidly from the early 1960s has reached the largest capacity in the world. It now plays a key role in the Japanese power grids as both the peak power generation and the power system stabilizer. In regard to the trends of design technologies for hydropower generating equipment, a Technical Report, vol. No.495, was issued on June 1994 by the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan aiming the development of hydropower generation. After nearly 20 years had passed from the issue, the progress of hydropower generating equipment is very remarkable in the field of upsizing, high- head/high-power/high-speed, and large-capacity under low head. The development of various design/analysis tools is also very notable. In addition, the adjustable (variable) speed pumped -storage has been developed and widely implemented in Japan. This technology is highly appreciated all over the world and we are proud of it. This report summarizes basic theories and methods about the design technologies for hydropower generating equipment as well as the latest trend in the technology progress after the prior issue. |
