Water and sewage works has aspects of industry with high environmental impact. Reduction of environmental impact is one of the top priorities in "Waterworks Vision" and "Sewage Vision 2100". From those perspectives, The Public Plant Engineering Technical Committee established "Investigating Committee on reduction of environmental impact in water and sewage works" on Dec., 2009. It had been active until Nov, 2011 for 2 years. We reviewed present status and problems regarding contribution of electric equipment, control and monitoring system, and systems technology to reduce environmental impact in water and sewage worksCand tried to suggest how those technologies are to be. Scope of the review ranged from water and sewage utilities and providers of equipment to related public infrastructure utilities. In this investigation, we included impact to "water environment" because water and sewage works are the components of water cycle. During the period of the investigation committee, we have experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. It not only caused serious damages, but also made us rethink low-carbon activities based on nuclear power generation. Accordingly, we also discussed from the point of view of "After 3.11" as much as we could though the earthquake happened after we had finished investigation activities. |
