Insulating materials used for each electric power apparatus changed mainly from natural insulating materials into artificial ones, and then they were made advanced and diversified. Insulation technology also progressed and the dielectric breakdown theory, the insulated lifetime theory, the electric field estimation and the various new measuring methods were well established. With such transitions of insulating materials and technological background, the insulating materials and structures of electric power apparatus have become different according to the manufacturing year and the voltage class. In order to perceive these degradation conditions, it is necessary to apply the insulation degradation diagnosis based on the characteristic of the insulating material used for each electric power apparatus. Based on such a social situation and a technological trend, this technical report edited the transitions of the insulating materials and the research and development and the application cases of degradation diagnosis technology in electric power apparatus.
