System engineering is a basic technology which is used in many fields such as electronics, information science, mechanics, chemistry and economics. Because systems in recent years are larger-scale and more complicated, it is hard to design the systems by using existing methods, and new methods are required to be developed. Recently, optimization and machine learning techniques which combine elements of swarm intelligence, evolution, adaptation and emergence have been recognized that they are promising for designing large-scale and complicated systems. They are called computational intelligence techniques. This article surveys the computational intelligence techniques and their applications to industrial systems. Specifically, we report particle swarm optimization (PSO), a pulsed neural network, a multi-agent system, an artificial immune system, reinforcement learning, differential evolution, and a support vector machine. We also deal with industry applications such as robot control, optimal operation of energy plant, an environmental problem, and a water supply operation support system. |
