The electromagnetic analysis technique is becoming an indispensable for today's rotating machine design which needs to realize high performance and efficiency of machine and development process. Highly efficient permanent magnet machines developed for electric hybrid vehicles and home appliances in this decade are typical examples where the analysis techniques made significant contributions. A remaining issue being requested from the industry is to deliver the technique to designers rather than dedicated CAE engineers as a design tool. This report describes the current status of computational simulation analysis technology of rotating machine from design work point of view. Machine designer's expectations and issues are shown through questionnaire survey and several actual use cases. Iron loss and cogging torque simulation techniques are also evaluated by comparing with measurements of IPM and SPM motors. The evaluation is focused on ability for high saturation and high harmonics conditions. Topics of advanced simulation techniques, which are loss evaluation for PWM drives, material modeling, coupled analysis with structural/thermal, high performance calculation and post processing, are included. |
