In Japan, R&D of flywheel energy storage systems using superconducting magnetic bearings started in the private sector in the early 1990s. Then, national projects for the systems using bulk superconductors had been conducted for ten years since 1995. During this period and thereafter R&D of superconducting magnetic bearings, flywheels of composite materials, active magnetic bearings, motor-generators, energy storage systems, etc. have been intensively carried out in Japan and overseas. It had been required to systematically organize important knowledge, theoretical analysis, technical development, improvement, and systemization technology obtained in various projects. So the Investigation R&D Committee on Flywheel Energy Storage Systems using Superconducting Magnetic Bearings was established to publish a technical report on elemental and systemization technologies related to the superconducting flywheel energy storage systems. The repot has six chapters describing R&D results obtained in large projects and current status of the technologies with emphasis on the superconducting magnetic bearings. |
