This IEEJ reports of surge arresters special committee describes " Power Technology of Japan through the Experience of Developments and Applications of Surge Arresters for AC3.3 - 1100kV and HVDC125 - 600kV Power Systems ". Surge arresters have been used as surge protecting devices for natural lightning phenomena. Metal oxide surge arresters are composed of zinc oxide (ZnO) elements having high nonlinearity in relation of voltage and current, and high discharge capability. These initial product arresters have more than 30 years of operations on substations in 2008. Metal oxide surge arresters born in Japan become the de facto standard of surge arresters instead of conventional arresters with multi-series gaps in the world. These metal oxide surge arresters have innovated the operation principle of surge arresters by accomplishing no follow current interruption. These technologies of Japan for metal oxide surge arresters have greatly contributed to the world for the reliability improvement of electrical power transmission. This technical report describes lightning phenomena, manufacturing of ZnO elements, developed surge arresters for AC3.3 - 550kV ,800kV,1100kV substations, power cable, railway, generators, distribution lines(6.6 - 33kV),22 - 500kV transmission line,HVDC125 - DC 600kV systems, and also UHV 1100kV insulation coordination, surge protective devices SPD(100/200V),maintenance methods of surge arresters, testing methods of surge arresters. |
